MANTLEOGRAPHY – PACIFIC RIM – MOVIE REVIEW
Pacific Rim is expected to be Guillermo Del Toro’s (GDT) most successful action blockbuster of his career. He is the director of the Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and one of my favs, Blade II. GDT is a horror fanatic and loves monsters, so Pacific Rim is his chance to bring his biggest creations to IMAX 3D.
Pacific Rim is more than just a ‘Robots Vs. Monsters’ movie, even though that is what most fans will expect to watch this feature for. Some critics are even calling it ‘Transformers meets Godzilla’ which is understandable to try and let moviegoers know what to expect. There are a lot of concepts borrowed from other films of the same genre, but Pacific Rim is and original, fun, action blockbuster.
The movie focuses on the character development of the two main Characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). The other characters don’t have much development in this story, but GDT makes them likeable and you will still root for them. The movie also star Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost, who is in charge of the Jaeger program (Jaeger means Hunter in German) to fight off the Kaiju (Japanese for monsters) attacking Earth. Developing some of the supporting cast would have actually made this movie even better, but given the stakes of being an original movie in Hollywood, and a having a $190 million dollar budget, it would be better to keep the movie fairly short. 162 minutes is fairly short compared to other big blockbuster action movies of the past few years.
I had a chance to see Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D at an advanced screening. I’m still not a fan of 3D, but they did it right in the same sense that Michael Bay did it right with Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. The 3D was really crisp and wasn’t used as a gimmick for this movie. There wasn’t any scenes that actually threw the 3D in your face which I was kind of glad because it didn’t distract me from the movie. When the Jaegers and the Kaiju are fighting, everything is in place so you don’t lose sight of what is going on. The only problem I did have was when they showed close ups of the fights with multiple Kaiju and Jagers, you couldn’t see what was what, until they showed what was going on inside the Jaeger to know who was being affected.
Overall, I thought Pacific Rim was really well put together. This movie could easily be the best action movie of the year. I personally like the fact that there is an international and diverse cast which makes it seem more realistic, in a sense, and that we are all living in the same world and all have the same things at stake. Guillermo Del Toro always knows what he wants to put on the screen and knows when to make the audience laugh. He even has a little cameo in the movie which was pretty hilarious. Del Toro was also pleased with the way Warner Bros. gave him the freedom to tell his story the way he wanted to tell it, which is why he is the most excited for this release!
This movie is what blockbuster movies should be about. Having a good time and saving the world while were at it. Pacific Rim opens today. Cancelling the apocalypse starts now!
